Economic Development

Economic Development

The Hunter JO drives regional economic growth by strengthening regional collaboration with our member councils to attract international tourism, demonstrate the benefits of a constructing a freight precinct at Newcastle Airport, and positioning the Hunter region as a world class events destination.

Through the Hunter Global strategy, we developed two Business Cases, along with a Tourism Marketing Strategy and Hunter Airports Strategy to unlock international tourism and freight opportunities and improving connectivity at Newcastle Airport. Our flagship Shiraz to Shore project developed the Concept Plan and Business Case for a  a 100-km cycle trail linking the Hunter Valley to the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie coast, expected to create nearly 200 jobs.

Complementing these initiatives, the Accelerating Event Economies (A2E) project supported councils to harness the social and economic benefits of major events, building capability, sharing resources, developing the Events10 website  to promote the Hunter as a premier destination for events and visitor experiences.
