Our Strategy
Help Shape the Hunter Region’s Future – Feedback Now Open on the Draft Hunter JO Strategic Plan 2035
The Hunter JO has released its draft Hunter JO Strategic Plan 2035, a 10-year aspirational plan reflecting the shared vision of our ten Member Councils of the Hunter Region.
The Plan has been developed through extensive engagement with our Board of ten Mayors and General Managers, a review of councils’ draft Community Strategic Plans, and alignment with key regional and state plans. It also builds on the priorities, challenges and opportunities identified through our ongoing program and advocacy work.
The Hunter JO, in collaboration with Member Councils and key stakeholders, will lead implementation of the Strategic Plan based on our funding, resources and grants available each year. Our Delivery Program 2025-29 demonstrates the projects and advocacy priorities to be delivered over the next four years.
Have your say
We’re now seeking feedback on the draft Plan, particularly the strategic themes, objectives, and directions. Are we on the right track? Have we missed anything?
📬 Have your say by emailing feedback to annaf@hunterjo.nsw.gov.au by Thursday 17 July 2025.
Your input will help shape the final Plan, which will be presented to the Hunter JO Board for endorsement in August 2025.

Statement of Strategic Regional Priorities
Joint Organisations are required to develop a Statement of Strategic Regional Priorities (SSRP) which sets out a vision for the region and provides an overview of the strategic actions required to deliver on that vision. Our SSRP is being referred to as the Hunter JO Strategic Plan 2032.
The Hunter JO Strategic Plan 2032 draws from the Community Strategic Plans (CSPs) of our ten Member Councils, regional-level plans, and other state strategic documents to clearly identify the highest regional priorities. It is a four-year document that aligns with the Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) cycle.
It has been developed around Four themes from our Strategic Plan and Six Regional Priority Statements from our Advocacy Framework, that set the framework for the Hunter JO SSRP. They guide our resourcing, capacity and delivery of advocacy and program actions moving forward.

The Hunter JO Strategic Plan 2032 is our guide in relation to the initiatives and priorities where the ten Member Councils collaborate day-to-day. It is a document that belongs to councils and their communities through intensive engagement and ongoing consultation, that allows the Hunter JO to amplify what local government is doing at a regional scale.
The vision set out in our Strategic Plan is to be a Region that:
- Is globally connected and whose residents enjoy transport and digital infrastructure and systems that enhance their economic and lifestyle opportunities;
- Is prepared for change and ready to withstand, adapt and recover from natural and human induced risks;
- Has an economy that continues to grow and evolve as a powerhouse of the state and national economies, providing more and higher quality jobs; and
- Will protect, preserve and improve the high standard of liveability and pristine environments.
Check out our Hunter JO Communications and Engagement Strategy 2032 for information on how we communicate about our strategic plan.
