Everyone agrees we need more housing.
But delivering new homes requires more than land alone. It needs infrastructure, planning, and making the most of available opportunities.
Across the Hunter, significant areas of development-ready land are available, yet many projects cannot proceed because the roads, water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure needs to support them has not been delivered.
At the same time, around 1,000 temporary homes are expected to be required for workers for the Hunter Transmission Project, creating an opportunity to consider how these dwellings could contribute to long-term housing outcomes once construction is complete.
When Mayors and General Managers from the Hunter’s ten councils visit NSW Parliament House next week, they will meet with Minister for Housing The Hon Rose Jackson MLC and Minister for Planning The Hon Paul Scully and Shadow Minister for Housing and Planning The Hon Chris Rath MLC to advocate for:
- A long-term, indexed enabling infrastructure program valued at $100 million per year to help unlock housing supply across the region.
- Opportunities to repurpose temporary accommodation associated with major state-significant projects to support long-term housing outcomes once construction is complete
Data from Hunter councils indicates that approximately $938 million in infrastructure investment could help unlock around 61,000 new homes across the region.
Mayor of Maitland City Council Philip Penfold said practical solutions are needed to help meet the regions growing housing needs.
“If we’re serious about delivering more homes, we need to invest in the infrastructure that unlocks development and look for innovative ways to increase housing supply.”
“From enabling infrastructure to repurposing temporary accommodation, these are practical options that can help create lasting benefits for Hunter communities.”
Together, we’re advocating for a stronger, more resilient and more prosperous Hunter.
