Hunter JO’s Net Zero Coordinator Chris Dart had the pleasure of recently attending the Riverina East Regional Organisation of Council’s (REROC) “No Time to Waste” Conference in Wagga Wagga. This year’s event brought together leaders from government, industry and local councils and was packed with inspiring discussion on advancing the circular economy in regional NSW.
One of the key takeaways from the conference was the focus on innovative solutions to support a sustainable, circular economy. Melbourne based company Bardee uses black soldier flies to recycle food waste into fertiliser and protein for pet food or animal feed, avoiding the carbon emissions caused by disposing of food waste in landfill.
Another impressive mindset shift came from Hay Shire Council who have embedded circular practices in their operations with their Circular Economy Strategy. Examples include building rather than buying public infrastructure like benches or play equipment, and using sustainable, long-lasting or repurposed materials where possible.
The event wrapped up with a tour of the Kurrajong Recycling Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Wagga Wagga who, with processes such as solar panel and e-waste disassembly, are making a difference in resource recovery.
Chris had the opportunity to present on the Hunter JO’s Landfill Emissions Data Management Project, a project supported by the NSW EPA through the Sustainability Partnerships 2023. This project has developed a comprehensive framework and guide to help councils estimate their landfill emissions using the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme Solid Waste Calculator (NGER SWC). It’s an important step forward to better managing emissions and driving sustainability in our local communities.
