Put our communities first this election

  • April 16, 2025

With Australians heading to the polls on Saturday 3 May, local councils are advocating through the Australian Local Government Association to make sure our local communities get the support they deserve.

As the election approaches, the “Put Our Communities First”  campaign is advocating for new Federal funding to be distributed to all councils on a formula based on equitable needs.

The campaign is advocating for a return of funding for local government to 1% of general revenue from the Commonwealth. Delivery on the five key funding requests identified by ALGA will go towards achieving:

  • $1.1 billion per year for enabling infrastructure to unlock housing supply
  • $500 million per year for community infrastructure
  • $600 million per year for safer local roads
  • $900 million per year for increased local government emergency management capability and capacity, and
  • $400 million per year for climate change adaptation.

For more information on these strategic asks, visit the campaign website.
