Powering Tomorrow: Regional Councils NSW PPA

Hunter JO and Mid North Coast JO are facilitating a renewable energy Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) for 13 councils across NSW. This includes MidCoast Council, Maitland Council, Muswellbrook Shire Council and Upper Hunter Shire Council.

The ‘Powering Tomorrow: Regional Councils NSW PPA’ aims to enable participating councils to purchase clean electricity at a stable and predictable price, helping councils budget more effectively and reduce financial risks. An experienced team of expert advisors has been assembled to lead the PPA, including probity, procurement, and technical energy advisors.

The PPA is estimated to reduce emissions by up to 40,000 t CO2-e each year, with the majority of participating councils seeking between 50% and 100% renewable energy for the long-term contract.

Council Net Zero Accelerator 2024

A total of 80 local government employees from NSW councils and joint organisations are currently participating in net zero training thanks to a partnership between Hunter JO, NSW Government, and Accelerate Zero. The program is providing best practice net zero training to over a third of councils in NSW, with a focus on regional councils.

The Council Net Zero Accelerator is an initiative of the NSW Government’s Joint Organisation Net Zero Accelerator (JONZA) program.
