Cement, one of the most used materials in the world plays an integral role in the built environment. The production of concrete entails a substantial carbon footprint, primarily attributed to cement production. However, advancements in low carbon cement and concrete offer promising avenues for reducing this footprint.
We understand that within councils’ concrete is one of the highest impact materials used in projects. The NSW government through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) have been running a low emissions specification program to support the adoption of low carbon concrete in councils across NSW.
The Hunter Joint Organisation collaborated with NSW DCCEEW to facilitate discussion between councils within the Hunter region and local suppliers to understand the availability of low carbon concrete for projects within the Hunter region and identify the opportunities, barriers and challenges associated with the future use of low carbon concrete in the Hunter region.
This session was part of an initiative to support the local supply chain as we prepare for an increasing focus on sustainable materials. It provided a platform for discussion and exploration – not decision making – focused on understanding the current market and the support needed to overcome potential barriers.
