The councils of the Hunter signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this month on Circular Economy Procurement, prioritising recycled materials and circular economy based services in council procurement in the region.
This marks a significant step for the Hunter JO’s Circular Economy program, and for the region, with council procurement set to play a significant role in supporting the region move toward a circular economy.
By prioritising recycled materials and circular economy services, the councils of the Hunter will not only lean towards sustainability in their procurement practices, but will create economies of scale for these products that will benefit the entire community, via local industry innovation and job creation. The MoU will also bring together councils to develop a common framework for a joint regional procurement of recycled materials, making sustainable procurement a more economical choice that will continue to drive further industry innovation and change.
