We have been quite active over the past few months as we pursue our key advocacy priorities for the Hunter region.
We have developed a Blueprint for Evolving the Hunter’s Economy that provides a comprehensive direction on the agreed priorities of the Region’s Mayors for evolving the region to a net zero economy. We are actively using this document to engage with the Commonwealth Net Zero Economy Agency and NSW Future Jobs and Investment Authority to influence Government policy and funding. We have also submitted key priorities to the Review of the Regional Development Act 2004 Issues Paper, ensuring our region’s needs are considered in this significant reform package being undertaken by the NSW Government that will directly affect regional communities.
Approval for a review of the NSW Waste Levy by the Minister for the Environment marks a significant milestone. Through the Hunter JO, the NSW EPA engaged with councils and stakeholders to contribute insights to inform the review’s design and scope. Our regional submission to the review, presented to Minister Sharpe and the NSW EPA, articulates recommendations that our councils believe will shape the future of waste management and resource recovery in our region.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Richmond Vale Rail Trail Supporters Group, we embarked on a field trip to explore the proposed Richmond Vale Rail Trail. This journey involved key representatives from the Commonwealth Government, including Meryl Swanson MP (Federal Member for Paterson) and Dan Repacholi MP (Federal Member for the Hunter). We were also joined by Cr Jay Suvaal, Mayor Cessnock City Council, and Cr Rosa Grine, Councillor Cessnock City Council. The discussions delved into broader opportunities presented by the Hunter Cycle Tourism Strategy and Shiraz to Shore trail, reflecting our commitment to holistic regional development.
