The Australian Government is planning for a future high speed rail network to connect Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and regional communities across the east coast of Australia.
The first phase connects Newcastle to Sydney in about one hour on a new dedicated high speed railway.
The Australian Government’s High Speed Rail Authority recently held six workshops across Newcastle and Sydney, engaging 89 participants from 62 organisations, including leaders from the community, government, and business sectors. Hunter JO staff participated in some of these workshops at which there was a strong support from the various stakeholders present for the potential benefits of high-speed rail.
Key Themes from the Workshops:
- Economic Growth & Job Creation: Participants highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic development, create jobs, and support housing growth in regional communities.
- Improved Commutes & Lifestyle Choices: Easier travel along the corridor was seen as a way to enhance work-life balance and create new lifestyle opportunities.
- Tourism & Sustainability: The project was recognized as a catalyst for regional tourism and a contributor to sustainability, supporting Australia’s net-zero goals.
The High Speed Rail Authority is using the detailed feedback from the workshops to shape the Business Case which will be presented to Government early next year to make a decision on the project’s future.
