Opportunities for economic transformation in the Hunter

  • October 1, 2026

The Hunter is entering a defining period in its history.

As one of Australia’s largest regional economies, our region has powered the prosperity of NSW for generations. Now, as our economy continues to evolve, we have a unique opportunity to attract investment, create future jobs and unlock new industries that will support our communities for decades to come.

To help shape that future, Mayors and General Managers from the Hunter’s ten councils will take a united regional voice to NSW Parliament House in October, meeting with Ministers The Hon Courtney Houssos and The Hon Steve Kamper, Shadow Ministers Dave Layzell and The Hon Kevin Anderson MP to advocate for the policies and investments needed to drive economic transformation and long-term prosperity across the region.

Key priorities include:

  • Increasing the NSW Future Jobs Investment Fund to $150 million per year.
  • Investing in catalytic economic diversification projects, including international tourism marketing and the Newcastle Airport Air Freight Precinct.
  • Progressing the recommendations of the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Beneficial and Productive Post-Mining Land Use.
  • Establishing a Community Benefit Fund for the Hunter Renewable Energy Zone.

Mayor of Singleton Sue Moore said the Hunter has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape its future.

“The Hunter has a proud industrial history and an exciting future. The question is not whether our region will change, it already is. The question is whether we act now to create new jobs, attract investment and ensure our communities share in the opportunities ahead.”

“Our councils are united in advocating for the investment, planning and policy settings needed to support economic diversification and build a stronger future for the Hunter.”

Together, we’re advocating for a stronger, more resilient and more prosperous Hunter.
