Regional Planning and Economic Development Forum

  • December 11, 2025

During November we held our Regional Planning and Economic Development Forum, where Council representatives collaboratively tackled challenges facing the Hunters economic transformation and explored options for whole of Government (Federal, State and Local) coordination.

The objective of the workshop was to discuss potential objectives for a dedicated focus in the Hunter region to offset the 50,000 jobs related to coal mining expected to be lost in the coming years and planning partnerships to support population growth.

Key highlights included:

  • A presentation from Joanna Kubota, Executive Director of The Parks, Sydney’s Parkland Councils who spoke to the Western Sydney City Deal, and their experiences in delivering a tri-government agreement.
  • Roundtable activities to envision the Hunters economic transformation and the objectives and pathways for getting there.
  • Identifying what needs to be delivered collaboratively by Federal, State and Local Governments achieve these objectives.

We were fortunate that our colleagues at Federal Net Zero Economy Authority and Department of Jobs and Workplace Relations joined us for these important conversations.
