Circular Economy Precincts

As our region evolves, the circular economy can become a key industry for the Hunter. Our Circular Precincts and Futures Hub initiative proposes a way to develop the industrial circular economy by establishing a network of interconnected precincts, businesses and stakeholders that is supported by a trusted body to help grow and activate this ecosystem, that we have called the Futures Hub.

With funding from the NSW Government, the Hunter JO developed a detailed business case that included:

  • Four Circular Economy Precinct concept plans
  • A Circular Economy Futures Hub Strategy and Concept Plan
  • Business Case and Implementation Plan for the Futures Hub.

Example concept plan:

The business case found that a fully developed circular economy has the potential to provide a range of benefits to the Hunter region, including:

  • Diverting 80% of the Hunter and Central Coast Region’s waste from landfill could result in an additional 1,020 jobs.
  • The potential economic value of CE to the Hunter and Central Coast Region is estimated to be in the order of $1.1 billion.
  • Economic diversity, decarbonisation and environmental benefits, and supporting State and National government goals.

You can find out more about the initiative by watching this short video

Next Steps

As of July 2025, we are engaging with key stakeholders from industry, government and academia to build support for the Circular Economy Precincts and Futures Hub concept and form an initial governance model.

Once complete we will be seeking funding to establish the Futures Hub and work to grow the region’s circular economy.
