Last week many of our regions Mayors and Councillors attended the National General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra, to represent the needs and priorities of our local communities and region.
Pleasingly, all six of our shared Hunter regional motions were endorsed by the conference.
Focusing on:
- Jobs and Skills – The need for investment in Council led, place-based initiatives that identify future land-use options post mining and economic diversification opportunities.
- Roads and Infrastructure – Updating Federal road funding programs so they properly account for regional realities.
- Financial Sustainability – Systems reform for grant funding.
- Emergency Management – Amending disaster recovery funding rules to expand eligibility to include repairs to critical council owned water and sewer infrastructure.
- Emergency Management – Establishing a non-competitive resilience and betterment funding framework that allows resilience upgrades during the emergency works phase of recovery.
Thank you to the Australian Local Government Association for hosting and enabling a platform for local government leaders to advocate for better funding, policy reforms and effective partnerships.
We will continue to advocate for the Hunters strategic regional priorities and work with our Mayor’s to provide a united and local voice for our communities.
