The Hunter Joint Organisation Chair Sue Moore Singleton Mayor, met with NSW Minister for Resources Courtney Houssos to discuss the Hunter’s economic future and the shared priorities of our region’s 10 councils.
With more than 800,000 people calling the Hunter home, ensuring our region remains prosperous as the economy evolves requires strong collaboration between local and state government.
Coal mining royalties contribute more than $3 billion every year to the NSW economy. As global coal demand changes, we’re advocating for a greater share of this investment to support the communities that have helped power the state’s economy for generations.
Our discussion focused on practical opportunities to accelerate economic diversification, including:
Increasing the NSW Future Jobs Investment Fund to $150m per year to support regional transition Investing mining royalties into catalytic projects that create new industries and jobs Pathways to address challenges with passing the Future Jobs Investment Bill Progressing the implementation of the NSW Parliament’s Inquiry recommendations into Beneficial and Productive Post-Mining Land UseWe also discussed the importance of stronger collaboration and regular engagement between the NSW Government and Hunter councils, ensuring local government has the information and partnerships needed to help deliver the Hunter’s economic transformation.
